(SIDE NOTE: When this was written, I did not have access to internet - this should be dated 6/25, and I was in Belgium. )
What a trip this has been
already! Four flights in five days
may be enough to kill a small horse.
I ended up deathly ill my last two days in Washington D.C., while
visiting my dear friend and roommate, Alisha. I wasn’t even hungover, so I absolutely did not deserve to
spend half my 8 hr. flight from DC to Brussels, Belgium losing my lunch,
breakfast, and supper in the lavatory.
But I did, and it was miserable at best. I skipped both free meals while flying over the
Atlantic - which is unusual for
me. I’m a dork and love love love
airplane food.
As I type this, I am sitting in the
Brussels airport waiting for my connecting flight to Prague, Czech
Republic. I am still very sick,
but am able to keep small amounts of food down at least. On the upside, nearly everyone I have
come into contact with has been so good to me. Whether it be the airport staff in Washington D.C. (who saw
how sick I was and immediately bumped me to the front of every line I needed),
or the nice man from the Ivory Coast whom I sat by on the plane for 8 hours to
Belgium (kind words and reassuring smiles can go a long ways when someone is in
distress and sick), and finally the stranger who woke me up just a few minutes
ago in the Brussels airport to make sure I would make my flight (my flight had
a longer layover than his, but he gave me a mint and told me to feel
better).
So my conclusion to this very first
post is that good intentions and kind gestures will trump sickness any day of
the week, and in nearly any country in the world.
I absolutely cannot wait to begin this adventure, and I will do my best to keep you all updated.
We are in for quite an experience!
Best,
Cass
