Survival Czech.
That’s what they called our 8-hour language course
today. I don’t think I need to
explain anything else about that.
I was pulled in and out of class today to try and get caught
up with everything. I now have a Czech student ID and a month long metro pass.
I am free to go anywhere in the city!
I was pleasantly surprised at how much Czech I remembered
(not much, but still….) the pronunciations came easier for me it seemed. But all morning words from my Grandpa
kept popping into my head. It took
everything I had not to just blurt one out…..I probably would have been kicked
out of class, because its quite a naughty word, and one that my Grandfather
only directed at cows when they were misbehaving :)
I made friends!!
The first girls to talk to me this morning surprised the heck out of
me. I have missed out on 2 days of
group excursions with classmates (sickness bleh), and I figured it would be an
uphill battle to fit in. I took a
devotional down to breakfast to eat alone, and a cute thing from Singapore
walked right up and introduced herself.
I have become a part of the Singapore group since then it seems. I found it difficult to relate to the American
girls I’ve come into contact with – maybe because they were from the East Coast
and I am not. But as the day
progressed, I became thankful that I missed the boat so to speak……watching from
the outside, it is very easy to see why Americans have such a bad rap in
foreign places. I have yet to
really get to know the girls, so that’s all I will say. I became friends with a girl – Nithya,
who was in my class. I felt like a
young young student again, we had each other excited to learn the Czech language
and tried it out on the streets every chance we had. The group of Singapore girls has sort of adopted me, and I
couldn’t be more thankful toward them.
It’s been a lot of fun sharing our cultures with each other and talking
world politics.
Tomorrow I am leaving the city though. Our program is bussing us up to Kutna
Hora – a smaller town that is infamous for its “Bone Church.” Can you believe it? A church made from
human bones!? The experience
should be creepy and spectacular altogether, and I cannot wait! Stay tuned for
photos of THAT :)
Until next time,
Best,
Cass
